Behind the Image

Man Against Self

I was walking through Ueno Park in Tokyo, Japan when I saw a scene I was very anxious to photograph. Being in Japan you automatically feel closer to nature than you might in many other cities. There’s just such an abundance of trees and natural beauty there, so much so that you almost forget you’re in a very active, busy city.

I chose to name this photograph Man Against Self because when you think about nature, it’s not a separate entity from us. We are nature as much as the trees are and as much as all the wildlife that lives within the forests is. So when we cut down more trees than we plant and hurt animals unnecessarily, we’re really hurting ourselves and the planet as a whole is paying the price.

Luckily the speed of information reaching people is at an all time high so educating ourselves on these matters has never been easier. It’s important to try to do as much as we can, on small and large scales, to make sure all living things in the world are living healthy, happy lives.
