Behind the Image

Ready

It was early in the day when I came across this surfer preparing to get into the water in Rockaway Beach, New York City. The sun reflecting on the sand and ocean waves was spectacular and made me feel like I was exactly where I wanted to be.

He stood there for a while, allowing the tide to wash over him, then recede, then wash over him again. This moment seemed so simple yet very magical to me. He was preparing to enter the water, but wasn’t quite ready yet.

Standing there in the surf he looked so focused and pensive, he might have been planning what he’d like to accomplish on the water that day. He might have just been enjoying the moment for what it was.

We’ll never know for sure, but I know that every time I look at this photograph I’m taken back to that day on the beach and can almost feel my feet sinking into the sand beneath me.
